James Cameron says that he is considering rebooting the Terminator franchise

James Cameron revealed that another Terminator reboot is currently “in discussion.” However, nothing is confirmed as of right now.

In an installment of the SmartLess podcast, Cameron discussed invented reality and artificial intelligence. This eventually led him into the topic of Terminator. He admitted that he had been thinking about relaunching the popular franchise. He knows what direction he would take it in, but “nothing has been decided yet.”

“If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy,” Cameron said, indicating that he wanted to explore AI concepts even more on the big screen.

The last movie James Cameron directed in the Terminator franchise was Terminator 2: Judgement Day. He did not have any involvement on the sequels that followed it. However, he did return as a producer on Terminator: Dark Fate. Cameron said he was “reasonably happy” with it, but he thinks it would have been better if the film didn’t use the original stars.

“The movie could have survived having Linda in it. I think it could have survived having Arnold in it, but when you put Lind and Arnold in it and then, you know, she’s 60-something, he’s 70-something. All of a sudden, it wasn’t your Terminator movie. It wasn’t even your dad’s Terminator movie. It was your granddad’s Terminator movie.”

Terminator: Dark Fate brought in over $250 million at the worldwide box office, but it had a production fee of $185 million and then anywhere from $80 million to $100 million in global marketing and distribution fees. It would have needed close to $450 million to break even. It did get positive reviews from critics either way.
