Avatar: The Way of Water is now the 4th highest-grossing movie ever

Avatar: The Way of Water has made another milestone in the box office, now becoming the 4th highest-grossing film of all time. Over the weekend, the sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar surpassed $2.116 billion. It has now beaten Star Wars: The Force Awakens, with only Titanic, Avengers: Endgame, and the original Avatar standing in front of it. Three of the top four are also films by Cameron.

In North America, Avatar: The Way of Water is still at #1 for the seventh week since it released. It has become the 11th highest-grossing film domestically ever.

Just behind Avatar 2 was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish with $8.46 million over the weekend, totaling to $149.2 million since it released. A Man Called Otto came in third with $6.75 million and M3GAN was in fourth place with $6.37 million.

Avatar: The Way of Water has been doing amazingly at the box office, despite initial analyses fearing that it would underperform. It seems like James Cameron’s movies often tend to be slow-burns in the box office, but when they pick up, they pick up fast.

If Avatar 2 continues to grow this way, it may surpass Titanic, which would be a powerful accomplishment.

James Cameron is also now the only director in the world to have three movies make over $2 billion: Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Titanic. Unsurprisingly enough, all three of the movies are among the top 10 highest-grossing films of all time.
