Avatar: The Way of Water has crossed $2 billion in the global box office

Avatar: The Way of Water has crossed $2 billion in the global box office. It is now James Cameron’s third movie to make such a massive figure. He is also the only director in the world to have three movies make $2 billion or more in the box office.

According to Deadline, the grand $2 billion total comes after the box office take from this weekend. The film has been at the No. 1 spot in the box office for six consecutive weeks since it released back in December 2022.

Avatar: The Way of Water had initially underperformed in the global box office, but it quickly began to rise to the top spot within no time.

Avatar: The Way of Water is the sequel to Cameron’s 2009 Avatar, which is still one of the highest grossing films of all time.

Cameron’s 1997 Titanic is also one of the only movies to gross over $2 billion. Only three other movies have grossed over $2 billion: Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.

As a director, James Cameron has accomplished many feats. He is the only director who has three movies to make over $2 billion — half of all movies that have made $2 billion or more. Cameron also holds the title of having six bestselling movies of all time under his name.

He has revealed plans to release at least three other Avatar sequels. With the success of Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water, that probably doesn’t come as a shock to anybody.
