Ubisoft announced its NFT project not too long ago, but it has been generally viewed without much popularity. The project, named Quartz, introduced the idea of in-game cosmetics that are also NFTs.

NFT stands for non-fungible token. It’s basically a digital item that you can own through crypto. Imagine it a basically being the ownership of the original “link” of the digital item. NFTs have been popular over the past year, with a grand majority of them being more along the lines of images. However, many corporations have taken a hold of NFTs, including French video game publisher, Ubisoft.

Ubisoft’s Quartz has prompted backlash from many, with the idea being largely unpopular. For their game Ghost Recon Breakpoint, they’ve given away a few cosmetics to people with a certain playtime. Others have purchased them, but didn’t really feel much of a difference in their experiences playing.

Nicholas Pouard, VP of Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovations Lab, believes that gamers simply “don’t get” the benefit of NFTs in video games yet.

“I think gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them. For now, because of the current situation and context of NFTs, gamers really believe it’s first destroying the planet, and second just a tool for speculation. But what we are seeing first is the end game. The end game is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re finished with them or they’re finished playing the game itself. So, it’s really, for them. It’s really beneficial. But they don’t get it for now.”

NFTs have been extremely controversial for their environmental impact, with the process of crypto mining utilizing a significantly large amount of power. Many artists have chosen to stick to traditional forms of selling art, viewing NFTs as immoral. However, Ubisoft has countered and said that their currency, Digits, utilize less energy than other NFT crypto currencies.
