The creator of PUBG, Brendan Greene, has revealed that his next video game will go all-in on the metaverse.
During an interview with Hit Points, Greene, 45, revealed that his next game Artemis will include NFTs, the metaverse, and blockchain technology.
“I was fascinated with this idea of digital spaces, places where there are no real rules but a set of systems that you can use. That fascinated me, and still does. I never considered just walking away,” Greene continued.
Artemis will reportedly allow for players to make anything they want to as a part of a large and open world. Additionally, it will incorporate blockchain into this creation.
NFTs and blockchain technology have been controversial points in the gaming industry, with games like Minecraft completely banning the use of blockchain and NFTs. Ubisoft has pulled away from their NFT project and Steam banned the use of blockchain technology in games on the platform as well.
Greene insists that Artemis is not about making money and that “the only way [Artemis] exists is if it’s made for everyone.” However, he did confirm that players will be able to “extract value” from their creations by selling in-game items to other players.
Artemis will reportedly let players make anything they like as part of a large, open world. But now, it looks as though the project will incorporate blockchain.
“I’m just going to do what I’m going to do,” Greene said. “But it doesn’t matter if it’s called the metaverse. I don’t care what people want to call it.”
The metaverse has been gaining steam lately, with companies across industries pitching in to take a jab at the metaverse. Walmart just recently unveiled its attempt to get Gen Z consumers by involving itself in the metaverse via Roblox.
There isn’t much else that’s known about Artemis at this point, nor how the metaverse component of it will shape. However, it’s probably expected that the incorporation of blockchain will be a point of controversy for many.
