Second Life is coming to mobile 20 years since it released

Before we heard all about the metaverse and Facebook trying to tap into it, Second Life was pretty much the first to start it all off. 20 years ago, Second Life let people play within a virtual world that mixed The Sims with what Meta wanted for its metaverse. And now, it’s coming to mobile.

Linden Labs, the developer behind Second Life, announced that a mobile version of Second Life is on its way and that a beta version is expected to launch later this year.

In a YouTube video posted to the Second Life community forum, new details were revealed about what players could expect from the mobile version of the game. It will be built using Unity, which would allow it to be easy to distribute and build on iOS and Android phones/tablets.

The YouTube preview also shows how Linden Labs is working to make sure the mobile version is as similar to the desktop version as possible.

Second Life, despite its age, has been strong since it first released. To date, 73 million accounts have been created. 900,000 users alone were active during the pandemic era.

A VR version of Second Life had been in the works by Linden Labs and would’ve been called Sansar. However, the developers ceased work on the project and sold off the rights back in 2020. The company did it to become “cash-positive” and noted that VR headset adoption did not come as fast as it had been hoping.

The mobile gaming world is one of the biggest in today’s world, with many companies opting to create mobile versions of popular AAA titles and more. Call of Duty mobile has been a big hit, but other companies like EA did not see much success with Apex Legends mobile for instance.

Either way, we have yet to see if Second Life will dominate the mobile world or not when it releases.
