No NFTs will be in Minecraft

Sorry crypto-bros, looks like Minecraft is off-limits.

Mojang, the developers behind Minecraft, have announced that they will not allow NFTs and blockchain in their game. In a blog post by the company titled “Minecraft and NFTs,” the Microsoft-owned studio stated that “integrations of NFTs with Minecraft are generally not something we will support or allow.”

Mojang also added: “To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our client and server applications, nor may Minecraft in-game content such as worlds, skins, persona items, or other mods, be utilized by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset.”

NFTs in gaming have always been a controversial issue. Many companies have taken a stand against the use of NFTs in their video games, others like Ubisoft caved into pressure to stop, but some have continued to push NFTs as well. Epic Games stated that it was “open” to blockchain games on the Epic Games Store last year, and the first blockchain game came in June. Steam, however, has taken a stand against NFTs.

For Mojang, the practice of integrating NFTs into video games encourages digital scarcity and exclusion, which the company states goes against the values of Minecraft.

“NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots.”

Mojang also stated that NFTs encourage “profiteering.”

However, the company did not fully state that it would never incorporate blockchain in the future. Currently, Mojang says that it has “no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft.”
