The creator behind the world-famous manga franchise Yu-Gi-Oh! has been found dead at 60 years old, after the Japanese coast guard found his deceased body in the ocean off Okinawa’s coast.

The artist was found on Wednesday but confirmed Thursday morning. He was found clean of injuries, but had on a set of snorkeling gear. The coast guard is looking further into the situation at hand.

Takahashi began to produce manga in the early 80’s, but became a world-renowned name in 1996 when Weekly Shonen Jump! would begin to publish his manga series Yu-Gi-Oh! The series told the story of a high school boy named Yui Mutou who would find an ancient Egyptian puzzle known as the Millennium Puzzle.

After solving the puzzle he would then unlock a darker second personality who would use games to torture bad people, before he utilized a card game that ended up sticking with the fans.

Most know the franchise due to its card game although it wasn’t always that way. Takahashi never wanted it to be the central focus of the series. The market wanted otherwise however, as it would slowly shift into the main focus of the series. The show itself would end in 2004, but it spurred an era of remake after remake and to this day it sits as one of the most popular animes of all time.

Takahashi moved on after the end of the original show, working on all kinds of projects such as Marvel’s Secret Reverse, a Marvel-offshoot manga.

After all of his contributions to the world of cartoons and comics Takahashi would win the Inkpot Award at Comic-Con international.
