Jonathan Bailey

Director of the Wicked movies Jon M. Chu has confirmed to media outlets that Jonathan Bailey will, in fact, be playing Fiyero in the new movies, following Variety’s reporting on the potential casting.

“He’s perfect, they’re perfect. They’d be perfect together. Born to be forever….. I am too excited to pretend this hasn’t been happening,” Chu said on Twitter.

“We have a Fiyero!!!! #JonathanBailey #Wicked.”

Bailey, who’s known for his role in the Netflix romance series Bridgerton, will be playing in the Wizard of Oz prequel film as a character named ‘Fiyero’. The film, which will star Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, will be a two-part movie and will come to cinemas during the Christmas season of 2024 and ’25.

The movie tells the origin story of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba, and Glinda, the Good Witch.

“We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one ‘Wicked’ movie but two!” Chu stated during an announcement of the two-part film. “With more space, we can tell the story of ‘Wicked’ as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys for these beloved characters.”

Stephen Schwartz, the original Broadway play’s musical and lyrical director, will be joining Winnie Holzman to adapt the new screenplay film. The original premiered on Broadway back in 2003 and has earned over $1 billion overtime, second to The Lion King. Marc Platt will be producing the films under his Universal-based banned: Marc Platt Productions, alongside David Stone.
