Google is officially shutting down its Hangouts service to make way for Google Chat.

Google has confirmed that beginning November 1, 2022 and onward, Hangouts on the web will no longer be available for users. Google is also looking to modernize its Google Workspace suite with the goal of making it effective for users.

Users who access Hangouts will now see a message that says: “Starting November 1, Hangouts on the web will redirect to Chat on Web. We recommend moving to Chat now.”

Back in 2020, Google announced that Hangouts would be shutting down, and now it’s official.

In July 2022, the Google Hangouts apps for Android and iOS were shut down and the official Chrome extension closed not too long after the apps.

Google explained that most messages and contacts will be moved to the new service, but some or parts of conversations will not automatically move from Hangouts to Chat. Affected users were already contacted.

Users have until January 1, 2023 to use Google’s Takeout service to download Hangouts data.
