Apple will not fix RCS green messaging

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, revealed why Apple will not fix the green message bubble issue. Apple users who text Android phones will see green bubbles instead of standard blue ones. It also removes the ability to see if your message was delivered or if the other person saw it. Many have requested that Apple fix this, but Tim Cook is saying that that’s not happening.

During a Vox Media Code conference, an attendee said to Cook that it was difficult for him to send videos to his mom because Apple devices don’t support RCS, which is the texting protocol used by Google. Cook then said to the attendee to buy his mom an iPhone. “I don’t hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that point,” Cook said.

RCS stands for Rich Communications Services protocol, and it’s the first time Tim Cook has really addressed the issue publicly. RCS allows for users to send high-quality photos and videos and would fix lots of issues when texting with Apple and Android. However, Apple does not want to give support to RCS.

It is possible that Apple could’ve made an Android version of iMessage, but Apple heads stated that it wouldn’t bring much benefit to Apple to do so.

It’s clearly a big way Apple tries to get more users to its devices and iPhones. People may not want to deal with the green messages and lack of compatibility in messaging between the two devices and just end up buying Apple phones over Android instead.

Google has been trying to get Apple to adopt RCS, which has been implemented by Google in Android phones, and it’s support by AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon.

Google SVP Hiroshi Lockheimer stated that Apple is “holding back” customers who text and said that there is a “Really Clear Solution” to the messaging issues.

“People should be able to send high quality videos and photos to their mom without having to buy her a new phone,” Lockheimer wrote over on Twitter.
