Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife is getting a sequel film in December of next year after the prequel film revitalized attention towards Sony’s Ghostbusters franchise.
In early June Reitman and his co-writer, Gil Kenan, confirmed that the ending sequence of Afterlife was, in fact, a teaser for the upcoming prequel, which will be returning to the franchise’s roots in New York.
The first movie debuted back in late 2021 garnered over $200 million in the global Box Office, even with the raging pandemic, and kicked off the ball for the start of more Ghostbusters movies to come. The new movie was revealed during a Ghostbusters Day interview with The Hollywood Reporter magazine.
“At the end of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the Ecto-1 is driving into Manhattan, returning to its home. And before anyone ever heard the title Afterlife, we called it Rust City,” Reitman told the interviewer. “Which would not have made sense to anyone until they saw the movie. The code name for the next movie is ‘Firehouse’.”
Afterlife saw the return of Hollywood star Bill Murray, although it’s currently unknown if he will show up for the sequel, especially following losing he role in Being Mortal due to his on-set actions.
