Starfield start screen starts conflict online

A screenshot of the Starfield start screen has leaked out onto the internet and it has somehow spawned a conflict already over on Twitter (now called X) between a Bethesda exec and a former World of Warcraft director.

Mark Kern, a former director for World of Warcraft, tweeted out a screenshot of the Starfield start screen on Saturday. In his tweet, he wrote that he believed that Bethesda did not spend enough time on it, saying: “The start screen of a game can reveal a lot about how rushed the team was and how much pride they took in their work.

“Starfield’s start screen either shows hasty shipping deadlines by a passionate team overworked, or a team that didn’t care.”

Kern went on to say that “Start screens are often done at the very end of development. Teams are too busy making the core game. It’s quite common for the start screen to completely change once the game is shipping or on path 0. Teams that take pride want to put a good face forward and will often redo these just prior to the game going live.”

Kern’s comments did not sit too well with Peter Hines, head of publishing at Bethesda. He countered, saying that the title screen did not indicate an overworked or unpassionate team.

In a reply tweet, Hines wrote: “Or they designed what they wanted and that’s been on our menu for years and was one of the first things we settled on.

“Having an opinion is one thing. Questioning a developer’s ‘care’ because you would have done it different is highly unprofessional coming from another ‘dev.'”

It looks like Peter Hines wasn’t the only person to take a jab at Kern’s comments over the leaked Starfield start screen. A now-deleted tweet by Microsoft’s InXile studio joked sarcastically about Kern’s tweet saying, “The campaign will be 45 minutes long but the start screen will be 20+ hours.” The tweet was spotted by Wccftech.

Starfield is the upcoming space adventure RPG that is being made by Bethesda. Last week, Bethesda announced that the game has gone gold, meaning that main development is ready and the game will be moving on to manufacturing.

Starfield is available for preorder still as well and for those who preorder or have the title through Xbox Game Pass, you can preload it on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
