Shooting at Buffalo, New York supermarket leaves 10 dead

A shooting in Buffalo, New York at a supermarket has left 10 dead. Authorities say that the shooter had traveled hours away from another part of New York. 3 others were injured.

The suspect has been identified as 18-year-old Payton Gendron. He has been charged with first-degree murder. He livestreamed the attack on Tops Friendly Markets supermarket.

The Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said that the shooter was “very heavily armed. He had tactical gear, he had a tactical helmet on, he had a camera that was livestreaming what he was doing.”

Twitch later confirmed that he had used their platform to livestream the attack.

The FBI is currently looking into the attack as a hate crime and a case of racially motivated violent extremism. Investigators are currently reviewing a manifesto that may be connected to the shooter that was posted online on Saturday.

Justice Clarence Thomas says Supreme Court changed by leak of draft abortion opinion

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas says that the Supreme Court has been changed by the leak of a draft opinion by Justice Samuel Alito. The draft opinion details plans to potentially overturn Roe v. Wade and leave the abortion debate in the hands of individual states.

“When you lose that trust, especially in the institution that I’m in, it changes the institution fundamentally. You begin to look over your shoulder. It’s like kind of an infidelity that you can explain it, but you can’t undo it.”

Chief Justice John Roberts has ordered an investigation into the leak and the court has stated that the draft does not represent the final position of any of the court’s members.

Mitch McConnell and delegation of Republican senators visit Kyiv

US Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and a delegation of Republican senators have traveled to Kyiv to visit with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Zelensky stated, “Thank you for your leadership in helping us in our struggle not only for our country, but also for democratic values and freedoms. We really appreciate it.”

He added that “Russia is committing genocide against the Ukrainian people.”

UN condemns killing of American-Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh

The UN Security Council released a statement condemning the killing of 51-year-old Shireen Abu Akleh, a veteran reporter at Al Jazeera. She was killed while covering an Israeli military raid in the West Bank.

The Security Council stated that its members called for “immediate, thorough, transparent, and fair and impartial investigation into the killing, and stressed the need to ensure accountability.”

During Abu Akleh’s funeral on Friday, Israeli police attacked the pallbearers, hitting them and causing her coffin to fall.

UN Security-General Antonio Guterres said that he was “deeply disturbed” by the confrontations.

Russia warns Finland against joining NATO

Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Finland against joining NATO, saying it would be “a mistake.” Russia also cut off electricity supplies to Finland.

He also stated that it would lead to a militarization of the Baltic region.

Turkey calls out Finland and Sweden’s support for rebels at NATO meeting

Turkey’s foreign minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, has called the support by Sweden and Finland for Kurdish rebels “unacceptable and outrageous.” The PKK (Kurdistan Worker’s Party) is a designated terrorist group by Turkey and its NATO allies.

“The problem is that these two countries are openly supporting and engaging with PKK and YPG (People’s Protection Units),” Cavusoglu said. “These are terrorist organizations that have been attacking our troops every day.”

All 30 members of NATO must approve of the application and acceptance may take several months.

A spokesman for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Ibrahim Kalin, said that Turkey was not against Sweden and Finland joining, but that negotiations were needed.

India is banning wheat exports

On Saturday, India has banned wheat exports amid a powerful heat wave and domestic prices hitting record highs.

The government said it would allow exports backed by already issued letters of credit and to countries that request supplies “to meet their food security needs.”

Senior government officials said the ban could be revised.

Ukrainian intelligence chief says a coup is underway to remove Putin

Ukraine’s head of military intelligence has stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “very sick” with cancer and that a coup is underway to oust him.

“It will eventually lead to the change of leadership of the Russian Federation. This process has already been launched and they are moving into that way,” Ukrainian Major Gen. Kyrylo Budanov told Sky News.

He added that a coup is underway and that it is “impossible to stop.”
