As an author and gamer, I’ve always found myself at a loss for finding a proper keyboard. While custom keyboards are popular, I was never really enthusiastic about that idea. Still, I wanted a keyboard that sounded and felt the way I wanted it to. And along comes the Corsair K100 RGB gaming keyboard.

As I’m typing this review, I can’t help but feel like it was the best purchase I have ever made in terms of peripherals. The Corsair K100 RGB is a magical slice from keyboard heaven that really does what it’s supposed to do: Function like a charm.

Features

The Corsair K100 RGB keyboard has several features that makes it very competitive in its sector. It has per-key RGB which allows for a very beautiful lightshow to be put on, and it looks great in both the light and the dark. It has a 44-zone three-sided RGB LightEdge as well, which allows for the RGB lighting to flow out the sides as well. It looks absolutely brilliant when sitting on a table.

It’s also powered by Corsair’s AXON Hyper-Processing Technology, which allows for hyper-polling of up to 8,000Hz and key scanning up to 4,000Hz. It can actuate at 0.25 ms, which is insanely fast and great for more competitive games like Call of Duty.

The Corsair K100 switches are linear optical-mechanical switches. What this means is that it doesn’t use a mechanical piece to actuate; rather, it omits the more “mechanical” piece and actuates by using infrared technology. This allows for it to be so fast when you’re typing or gaming. I’ve previously used the Razer Huntsman purple clicky opto-mechanical switches, so this isn’t the first time I’ve used optical-mechanical switches. However, I significantly preferred the factory-lubed linear Corsair switches in the K100 over the purple clicky switches in my older Razer Huntsman.

It also features a pretty neat iCUE control wheel that you can customize to do what you want it to do. I typically use it to zoom ahead in videos or skip tracks, especially when I’m listening to Spotify.

The Corsair K100 also features six dedicated macro keys that you can program to do what you please or integrate your Elgato Stream Deck and use the macro keys for that instead.

Typing and Every Day Use

Aside from gaming, I’m the author of my debut SciFi series, The Fallen Age Saga. I’ve always valued the way my keyboards feel and sound when I type on them. This has led me to purchase more keyboards than most normal people should, but I will continue to purchase keyboards simply because I have an obsession now.

When I chose my laptop (MSI GS66 Stealth), I picked it because its specs were great but also because it felt good to type on compared to other laptops in its relative caliber.

The K100 is an amazing keyboard to type on. With its soft and leather wrist rest, I’ve been able to improve my ergonomics a ton. I personally have some pretty rough hand/wrist pain from excess typing and art and all that, so I always look for keyboards and devices that make my experience better.

The keys are satisfying to type on, and have a nice muted click that’s amplified by the factory lubing. You can most certainly lube it yourself as well to improve the sound and feel, but it was good enough for me as is.

Gaming

If you’re a competitive gamer, or even a casual gamer, this keyboard is quite literally perfect for all types of gaming experiences. The programmable macro keys at the side allow for an easier time in some games. Plus, its response time is phenomenal, which means that you can get your movement perfected in more competitive FPS games like Fortnite.

I tested several games using the K100, including Call of Duty, A Plague Tale Innocence, Halo Infinite, and more (PC Game Pass helped out there!). Each game saw improved movement and performance, as well as a smoother experience tapping on the keys.

Final Thoughts

Although this keyboard comes at a larger price point, it really does make up for it with its functions. It’s a keyboard that can last a long time, looks stunning and visually brilliant, and comes with features not many keyboards include.

For streamers, this keyboard is perfect with its El Gato integrations. For casual gamers, this keyboard is brilliant and improves the look of any gaming setup any day.

I feature my keyboard a lot on my Instagram: @symbi.osis.
