Mortal Kombat 12 likely to be a reboot of the franchise titled Mortal Kombat 1

A new teaser for the next Mortal Kombat game was recently dropped over on Twitter by Ed Boon, the co-creator of Mortal Kombat and chief creative officer for NetherRealm Studios. The video was quite cryptic and was uploaded with #MortalKombat written in the tweet.

The teaser shows a clock moving forward in time, stopping at 11:00 before skipping ahead to 1:00. The video seemed to be hinting at the next Mortal Kombat entry, which was recently thought to be Mortal Kombat 12. However, it looks like now the next Mortal Kombat title will be a reboot of the series or a remake of the original Mortal Kombat.

Twitter leaker billbil-Kuhn revealed the next game’s name as Mortal Kombat 1, which seems to confirm the idea that the next title will be a reboot for the popular fighting series.

Windows Central also confirmed that the information leaked by billbil-kun is accurate and that Mortal Kombat 1 is officially coming. It’s set to release on the Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It also looks like more details are coming in the next couple of weeks.

Mortal Kombat 1 is currently set for a release in September 2023, but that is subject to change. It will feature various properties opened by Warner Brothers in the MK1 character pass, including Peacemaker from the DC Universe and possibly Homelander from The Boys — this information has yet to be confirmed, however.

A reboot of Mortal Komabt makes sense, considering the storyline from Mortal Kombat 11. SPOILERS AHEAD:

At the end of MK11, a villain named Konica attempted to remake the Mortal Kombat universe in her image. She filled when Liz Kant defeated her and undid the damage she wrought. The universe was reset in the process to how it used to be, but with new details.

It’s very possible that Mortal Kombat 1 will be a retelling of the original Mortal Kombat game or that it may be a prequel. These details are likely going to be revealed as we enter the Summer Games Fest season.
