The ten best dark fantasy anime you should watch right now

Dark fantasy has always been a popular genre with anime fans. Anime–the Japanese version of cartoons–is widely beloved for its ability to explore a vast array of genres and still be entertaining. When it comes to dark fantasy, the Japanese know how to do it right, and I’m sure you can think of a few great classic titles yourself.

When I think of dark fantasy, I think of magic, horror, and some epic world-building. And plenty of anime out there do just that. But, we’ve picked out the ten that we think are the best for this list! So, without a further ado, let’s go! (Oh, by the way, this list is not in any particular order).

1. Berserk

Berserk is an emotional turmoil to watch, but people all over the world praise it for its excellent dark fantasy storytelling

We’d be completely joking ourselves if we didn’t include Berserk on this list. Berserk, created by the late Kentaro Miura (RIP), is one of the most beloved anime and manga ever made.

It’s a very dark tale and includes tons of psychology. But it’s most certainly NOT for the faint of heart and there are some extremely disturbing moments.

Still, the story is sad and the soundtrack is amazing. So, if you’re willing to take the risk to watch this title, then go ahead. But you’ve been warned.

2. Goblin Slayer

Goblin Slayer is controversial, but its dark fantasy elements are beloved by many in the anime community

GAWWWBLINS!!!

Yeah, Goblin Slayer had to make it on this list for sure. One of the best examples of a dark fantasy anime that feels like a DnD campaign gone horribly wrong, Goblin Slayer excels at being dark.

It’s also one of the most controversial in this subgenre, with the first episode featuring some not-so-fun stuff to watch. We recommend skipping it if you think you won’t feel comfortable. You’ll catch up either way.

But Goblin Slayer is a very great show if you can stomach some more heavy topics, and the main hero is a fantastic one at that.

3. Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer is one of the best dark fantasy anime out there, and many praise it for its amazing story and animation

Lots of slayers on this list apparently…

All jokes aside, Demon Slayer is one of the most popular anime to come out in recent years and for a pretty good reason. It’s one of the most gorgeous to look at, and its story is really addictive to watch.

Demon Slayer follows the story of Tanjiro, who’s entire family is killed by demons aside from his sister. His main quest is to figure out how to get his sister back to normal. It’s a wonderful story and the characters are amazingly written.

Definitely give this one a watch!

4. Akame Ga Kill!

Akame Ga Kill! is a great, but sad dark fantasy that really works with its story telling skills

This one is really good. I mean it. But once again, you cannot be faint of heart or queasy if you wanna watch this one.

Akama Ga Kill is a pretty sad one as well–no spoilers allowed–and it’s got some great character dynamics, awesome action, and some brutal stuff as well.

This one is about a young man named Tatsumi, who goes to the city to try and get some money to send back to his village. However, when he arrives at the city, he realizes that it’s not the paradise he imagined.

There are some really dark moments in this show and it doesn’t really get any happier. So, have fun?

5. Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan is a brutal dark fantasy that is beloved by many in the anime world for a reason

I’m not kidding when I say that Attack on Titan is one of the best dark fantasy anime ever. I remember when I first watched it a couple years back. I was instantly hooked to this one.

Attack on Titan is dark, grim, and doesn’t really give you a second to breathe. It’s gruesome almost immediately, telling the story of the fall of humanity at the hands of these man-eating beasts called titans.

There’s a lot of philosophy, politics, conspiracies, and more throughout. But once again, not for the sensitive folks out there.

6. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood has dark fantasy elements in it, with its alchemy of course

We’d be crazy not to include Fullmetal Alchemist on this list. It’s an amazing anime and one that everyone who watches recommends.

FMA follows the story of the Elric brothers, who lose their human bodies after failing to bring their mother back to life. There’s a lot of brotherhood in this one and its fantasy element is strong as well.

FMA is a wonderful show and one that you’ll definitely enjoy.

7. Made in Abyss

Made in Abyss will destroy you emotionally, but it's dark fantasy elements are powerful

The premise of this one is actually pretty horrifying, but its amazing writing and interesting villain make this one a trip worthwhile.

Made in Abyss takes place in a strange town called Orth, which was built around a strange hole in the ground. The deeper you go down, the more insane things become.

This one really tackles philosophy and morality, so if you like those kinds of deeper elements, it’s a great dark fantasy to give a watch.

8. The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland is a sad, but amazingly written dark fantasy anime

Tears will be shed with this one, I can assure you.

The Promised Neverland is genuinely horrifying, but not in a bad way to the point where you can’t watch it. It’s horrifying in that it really looks at childhood innocence and shows just how quickly it can shatter.

I won’t spoil anything, but it’s a really sad story that’s worth watching any day. I would honestly watch it again from how much I loved it.

9. Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate

Hellsing Ultimate is a hyper-violent dark fantasy anime featuring vampires, of course

If you’re a fan of vampires, then Hellsing is perfect for you.

This dark and violent fantasy anime follows the story of vampire hunters called Hellsing who have to team up with a vampire named Alucard who wants a legal method of enacting carnage.

It’s a pretty violent one and once again, not for those who are a bit sensitive to gore. However, if you can handle it, then go right on ahead.

10. Tokyo Ghoul

Tokyo Ghoul is a dark, terrifying tale but it's a great dark fantasy anime for sure

Tokyo Ghoul is brutal, but it’s beloved in the anime community. And for a reason.

It’s one of the most popular dark fantasy anime out there and follows the story of Ken Kaneki, a regular guy who gets turned into a half-ghoul and must learn to live with this newfound power that he definitely didn’t ask for.

Tokyo Ghoul, like many on this list, can get pretty wild and gruesome, but its story definitely makes up for it.
