M3GAN sees debut of $45 million globally

Universal and Blumhouse’s doll thriller, M3GAN has made a little over $30 million in its opening weekend across North American theaters. Internationally, M3GAN has made $14.8 million, totaling the global box office amount to $45 million.

M3GAN, which is short for Model 3 Generative Android, is a PG-13 horror film that was projected to open to a about $20 million in North America. However, it seems like audiences were more interested in the horror film than expectations predicted. The movie had a budget of $12 million, so the debut is definitely impactful.

Jim Orr, Universal’s president of domestic distribution, said that “Blumhouse and James Wan’s Atomic Monster delivered an incredible film. It’s fun, it’s scary, it’s thrilling.”

Orr added that “word-of-mouth is through the roof.”

The turnout for M3GAN is also impactful for theaters, as January tends to not see much at the box office. M3GAN is now the first movie to open to more than $30 million in the first week of January since 2012, when The Devil Inside made $33.7 million.

M3GAN had become a viral internet sensation prior to the film’s release, with her dance becoming popular over on TikTok as well. Universal and Blumhouse capitalized on the internet success, promoting the film to audiences on the social media app and beyond.

M3GAN was directed by Gerard Johnstone and follows the story of a roboticist who creates a realistic AI that is supposed to be the perfect friend to her recently orphaned niece.

Still, Avatar: The Way of Water is currently the king at the box office. Since its release, the sci-fi tale has made $1.7 billion globally. It is now the seventh highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar 2 has also overtaken Top Gun: Maverick as the highest grossing film of 2022.
