Google denies rumor that Stadia is shutting down

Earlier this week, a rumor went viral online claiming that Google was planning on shutting down Stadia–it’s cloud gaming service–by the end of the Summer. However, Google has formally denied the rumor, saying it is “working on bringing more great games to the platform.”

The rumor most likely gained traction online due to Stadia’s somewhat rocky history. Since its release, the Stadia has seen a swarm of problems, including absence of some functionality at launch as well as the shuttering of Stadia’s internal development studio back in 2021.

Yesterday, a Twitter account by the name of Killed by Google posted a rumor stating that Google’s Stadia will shut down by the end of the Summer. The rumor was attributed to an alleged anonymous friend of a regional manager at Google.

In the message, the anonymous friend states: “Long story short Google is beginning their exit plan. They did not have an exact date that end of service will happen, but they did say by the end of summer. He also mentioned that they will not be transferring their services or servers to any other competition per se, and it will be much like they did with Google Play Music, same exit approach and strategy.”

“He also mentioned that all members would be informed 30-60 days before, and that the last month of service will be refunded and no charge for its usage. Also, any available subscription months will be refunded fully to your linked bank account.”

Of course, many looked at the rumor and believed that it may genuinely have held legitimacy. Still, rumors and leaks need to be taken with a grain of salt always.

The official Stadia account tweeted that “Stadia is not shutting down” in response to a Twitter user’s question on the rumor. “Rest assured we’re always working on bringing more great games to the platform and Stadia Pro.”
