Signs can indicate many, many things. If you’re hiking, a sign can let you know about any steep cliffs up ahead. If you’re driving, signs can help you stay safe and drive like a normal person. However, sometimes, some signs are very unsettling and they don’t indicate anything nice up ahead. And there are some really scary signs out that that you never want to come across.
Signs are usually put up for a very good reason, and if there is something dangerous up ahead, you definitely want to know. It’s better to be safe than sorry, so always remember to heed the warnings and avoid what’s to come by reading those signs!

20. Toxic Gases Ahead…Freaky
This is definitely one sign that you should hope you never have to see. Immediate death from inhaling manure gases does not sound like a fun time. In case you were wondering, manure is another word for poop. So yes, that sh*t can kill you.
19. Brain-Eating Parasites, Anyone?
This sign is downright terrifying if you know what naegleria fowleri is. For the uninformed, N. Fowleri is a deadly brain-eating amoeba that typically thrives in hot fresh water. It can travel up to the brain when it enters a person’s nose for example. So, if you’re planning on taking a dive in some warm lake water soon, be sure to wear a nose plug! N. Fowleri infections are rare, but if you get it, it’s almost certain death. Not a fun time for anyone involved at all.
18. Heed This Warning, Please!
This is pretty unsettling to read. It’s so sad to realize that their poor dog died like that and their fears are very valid. I guess this is one warning you probably shouldn’t mess around with…
17. What About the Last Third??
Who doesn’t love a good corn maze? They’re practically a staple of fall. However, a maze is something you can easily get lost in. Luckily, if you’re lost, this maze will be able to find you! Let’s just hope you’re not in the unlucky one-third of lost souls though.

Life is pretty good until you get a grim reminder like this. It’s definitely a creepy reminder. But still, it’s valid. Make sure to perform some good deeds today…
15. Definitely Do Not Trespass Here…
Asylums can be pretty creepy, considering that a lot of crazy stuff happened in them. You can’t convince me that they’re not haunted…but still, calling it a criminal lunatic asylum is not comforting at all. I don’t think you could pay me to trespass here, honestly. And yes, this is a real hospital that’s still in operation today. It’s not called the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum officially anymore, but the legacy is still there for sure.
14. Beware of the Propellers
I mean, this one definitely gets the point across. But seriously, that’s a terrifying thought. Next time you’re near a propeller, just be sure to keep your head low. Wouldn’t want to lose it…
13. A Water Death Trap
This is actually really freaky when you know what weirs do. It’s quite literally a drowning machine that unfortunately many people don’t know about. The water basically just keeps slamming you over and over and pulling you back in. Escape is impossible and drowning is severely inevitable. Keep a close eye out for these signs, people.
12. Uh, What Happened Here?
I wonder what the backstory to this is, because it’s really unsettling. I can’t imagine the thought of someone being trapped and knowing they’re never getting out. Make sure to check before you lock a room folks. Especially if dangerous stuff is inside.
11. Ski Trip Gone Wrong
I’m not sure what’s creepier: The sign or the fact that there are track marks next to it… This is definitely one scary sign you don’t want to come across ever.
10. What if I heard Seven?
This sign is actually for a dam located in Missouri in the United States. Basically, if you hear eight blasts that means that the dam is about to break. I don’t think I need to explain how much of a major emergency that would be.
9. What’s Out There? Zombies?!
I really want to know the context behind this sign. It looks like a bunch of hands…so are we talking zombies, demons, or worse? Someone please explain!
8. Sad Reality
We unfortunately live in a world with some very evil people. This sign is inside of a school warning people to not open the door at all. And yes, it’s for the exact reason that you’re thinking. Pretty unsettling. I wish this were a scary sign that wasn’t real.
7. Ah, More Gas
It may not be manure, but I feel like this might be just as bad honestly. In case you were wondering if the natural toxic gas was safe, they made sure to put a skull and crossbones. So, you can double-check that this place is definitely dangerous.
6. Not A Very Proper Exit Honestly
A sudden drop sounds like one of the most terrifying things ever. This is definitely freaky. Thankfully they’ve got signs and chains. But that probably means someone met an unfortunate end here…
5. Black Death, Anyone?
Sometimes, life has to remind you that it’s not very fun. The Bubonic Plague was also called the Black Death and it basically killed off half of Europe in its hay-day. Although it’s largely been eradicated, that doesn’t mean that getting it is totally impossible. And yeah, definitely watch out for wild rodents. They might be carrying the Plague, so avoid them, please.
4. Stay Safe in the Heat
Heat is very dangerous and can cause things like heat strokes. Mixed with stuff like dehydration, heat is a killer thing. Obviously, I’d heed this warning. Heat does not pick and choose who it attacks.
3. Thanks For the Reminder
As if snakes weren’t freaky enough, just knowing that they’re monitoring us is not exactly fun either. Snakes aren’t all deadly and dangerous, but some species have a license to kill and they’re not afraid to use it
2. Is That Really a Deer?
Deer may look innocent, but I guess the ones at Zion National Park are aggressive monsters. But…if the deer is standing up like that…are we talking about a deer, or something entirely different?
1. The Cave of Doom
You ever watch a movie where the main characters are so dumb that they go into a dark place like a cave when they know it’s a bad idea? Yeah, don’t be like those characters. The fact that experienced instructors didn’t make it out is freaky. Best thing to do is to just stay away from places like this, because this is definitely a scary sign you don’t want to come across anytime soon.
