The Tomb Raider film franchise, which for just under the past decade now has been property of MGM, has lost its owner and is now in the search for a new studio.
Opening bids for the franchise began last week, but it has turned into an all-out bidding war as multiple studios and streamers have been trying to acquire the widely-popular film series.
Alicia Vikander, who is no longer part of the film property, starred in the 2018 reboot film that got a solid $275 million at the global box office. The studio planned to produce a sequel film, which was to be directed by Misha Green. However, the project has been dropped and they plan to recast the main character.
MGM acquired the film back in 2013 from GK Films. GK Films originally obtained the film rights from Square Enix, the original game studio, back in 2011.
This isn’t the first set of films made for the movie however. Angelina Jolie starred in Paramount’s own series back in the early 2000’s. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) both made a combined $432 million.
One source has described the bidding battle for the series as a “feeding frenzy.”
