The producer behind the widely popular Netflix anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, says that there are currently no plans to make a second season.
Edgerunners ran for 10 episodes and released on Netflix on September 13 to praise and positive reception.
In a recent interview with Famitsu, CD Projekt Red‘s Japan country manager Satoru Honma said that there were no plans to continue the story.
“I personally would like to continue to work with Japanese studios to produce more anime in the future, partly because we have received very good feedback.
“However, just to be clear, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was planned as a standalone work, so there’s no such thing as ‘we are actually working on Season 2 in the background.’ Even if we could make more anime in the future, I don’t know if it would be Season 2 or something completely different.”
Edgerunners is animated by Tokyo-based Studio Trigger, directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill), and features an original score composed by Akira Yamaoka, who worked on Silent Hill’s soundtrack.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunnrs has been a massive success for Cyberpunk 2077 and Netflix, remaining in the global top ten for over a month and receiving one of Netflix’s highest review scores ever.
Along with the popularity of Edgerunners and patches for Cyberpunk 2077, over one million were playing daily and the game has seen a resurgence.
Honma continued, saying, “overseas people say that the anime has given CDPR a second chance. We are grateful to TRIGGER for giving us the chance to enjoy the story of V and Johnny Silverhand after watching the anime.”
CD Projekt Red recently announced that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, currently codenamed Orion, is in the works.
