Square Enix Symbiogenesis is a playable NFT experience

Square Enix’s latest announcement has many upset after it was revealed that it’s “new franchise” will be related to NFTs.

Symbiogenesis is supposed to be a “first digital collectible art project designed from the ground up for Web3 fans.” It will be set in a world where “a wide cast of characters symbiosis, all of which can be collected as digital art.”

Square Enix is promising “an interactive story and a dedicated community” for Symbiogenesis.

The art that is supposed to be collected can be used “as a character in a story that takes place in an alternate world where the player can ‘untangle’ a mystery by completing missions that revolve around questions of the monopolization and distribution of resources.” The art can also be used as social media profile pictures.

Sales for Symbiogenesis NFTs will begin spring 2023.

However, the announcement doesn’t seem to have many too excited. NFTs have been considered a relatively unpopular thing for gaming, and has been met with lots of global resistance. Earlier this year, we actually made a video on The DZSH Group’s official YouTube channel discussing how NFTs have taken a hit and why they’re so unpopular for gamers. You can watch that below:

In general, NFTs have lost a significant amount of value since the craze seemed to fizzle out. However, it looks like Square Enix is still doubling down on the NFT projects.

Back in the 2022 Shareholders’ Meeting Report in June, Square Enix shared plans to create “story-focused NFTs.”

Square Enix has goals to develop blockchain games and entertainment products, with an NFT for Final Fantasy already being sold alongside a figure of Cloud Strife. The NFT adds on about $30 to the base figure’s price.

Square Enix is running its NFTs on a service called Enjin, but blockchain and crypto have the tendency to be volatile, and if Enjin shuts down, then all Square Enix NFTs would effectively become useless.

Side note: The name ‘Symbiogenesis’ did make me laugh a bit because a few years ago when I was searching for my gamer handle, I picked the name ‘Symbiosis’ after remembering the word from biology class. I did not expect to see my name being used for NFTs, I’ll say that. I make YouTube videos of my own under the same name, by the way. You can check out my stuff here.
