Bloomber Team has confirmed that it is working on the remake of Silent Hill 2, which will be built using Unreal Engine 5 and have many improvements and features over the original iteration.
Konami producer Motoi Okamoto wrote in a PlayStation Blog that “with a new perspective, we’re rebuilding the combat system and certain set-pieces, among other things. Now that you see basically what James can see, we could find new ways to keep the player on edge.”
Konami revealed more details on Unreal Engine 5 and how Silent Hill 2’s remake will use Unreal Engine’s Lumen and Nanite technologies.
There will also be an over-the-shoulder camera. “With that change, we want to immerse players even deeper into the game, make them feel like they are a part of this unreal world, and deliver them a more visceral experience across the board.
“With the possibilities of Unreal Engine 5, we’re bringing the foggy, sinister town to life in ways that were impossible up to this point. The game will delight PlayStation 5 players visually, auditorily, and sensorily.
“Some of the Unreal Engine 5 features that really shine are Lumen and Nanite. With them we’re raising the graphics to new, highly-detailed and realistic levels, while turning the game’s signature nerve-racking atmosphere to eleven.”
Bloober Team stated that it wants to recreate everything that made Silent Hill 2 a classic and to add new elements in order to make the world more immersive.
There will be no loading screens in the Silent Hill 2 remake. It will also have seamless gameplay when transitioning from area to area and coming out of cutscenes.
“Silent Hill 2 is a cult classic, and it’s widely recognized as one of the best games ever made,” Bloober Team’s creative director Mateusz Lenart said. “We want Silent Hill 2 to make the same strong impression today that the original game did 21 years ago.
“While we want to achieve the same end result, players’ expectations evolve over time, and certain things need to be modernized to have the same or similar effect. For example, that’s why we went with the over-the-shoulder camera so we can immerse the players into the game world as much as possible.”
The Silent Hill 2 remake was one of several projects announced on Wednesday, alongside Silent Hill Townfall by No Code and another new game called Silent Hill F.
Earlier this year, Bloober Team claimed that it was working on an existing horror IP from a “very famous gaming publisher.” It was speculated that it would be Silent Hill after screenshots of what looked like a remake of Silent Hill 2 leaked online.
