Ike Perlmutter laid off by Disney

Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, chairman of Marvel Entertainment, has been laid off a Disney. Marvel Entertainment will now be folded into the larger Disney business units.

The move comes as Disney moves to cut 7,000 jobs in several rounds of layoffs. The layoffs have been called part of a “strategic realignment” by CEO Bob Iger.

Along with Perlmutter, Rob Grosser, a third-party Marvel security consultant is also out. Disney has also terminated the employment of Rob Steffens, who served as co-president of Marvel Entertainment and John Turitzin, who was chief counsel.

Grosser had assisted in the investigation on media leaks at Marvel, including the 1012 incident where information was revealed about the first Guardians of the Galaxy film before it was officially announced.

Perlmutter had joined Marvel Comics’ board of directions in 1993 and had established control of the Marvel Group with Avi Arad back in 1997 when the company faced bankruptcy. In 2001, Ike became the vice chairman of Marvel and CEO of Marvel Comics in 2005.

Perlmutter remained CEO of Marvel Comics after Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment back in 2009. However, he frequently got into conflict with Marvel Studios president and creative architect Kevin Feige. They often clashed over monetary decisions and Perlmutter was cited as frequently refusing to greenlight POC-led and female-led Marvel films.

In September 2015, Feige successfully moved Marvel Studios out from Perlmutter’s direction. Marvel Television was also moved under Feige’s control and out of Perlmutter’s.

The New York Times was the first to report on Perlmutter’s departure.
