Assassin’s Creed is one of the biggest and most recognizable video game franchises ever. Its heavy emphasis on historical events and places makes it a unique series. For a more creative playthrough, you can try to play Assassin’s Creed in its order of historical time and place. Here’s a guide on how to play the Assassin’s Creed games in chronological order.
Please note, it’s recommended that you play the games in order of release first, as playing through them chronologically will lead to spoilers about some of the other titles.
1. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
Prior to the Templars and the Assassins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes players on an adventure through time to Ancient Greece. You take on the role of a mercenary named Kassandra or Alexios, depending on your choice.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey does not necessarily feature the most standard Assassin’s Creed gameplay out there, as it is more of an RPG than anything else. However, it’s still quite a fun game that’s worth playing either way.
2. Assassin’s Creed Origins
Assassin’s Creed Origins takes players back to Ancient Egypt in the time of Cleopatra and the Ancient Roman conquest of the region. Players take on the role of Bayek of Siwa, a Medjay who is seeking revenge for his murdered son.
Assassin’s Creed Origins also reveals the formation of the Hidden Ones, which is the precursor to the Assassin’s Brotherhood from the first Assassin’s Creed title.
3. Assassin’s Creed Mirage
Although it hasn’t released yet, when it does, Assassin’s Creed Mirage would be the third in this list. Set before the events of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Mirage follows the life of a Hidden One named Basim Ibn Ishaq.
The title is promising to return to a more basic style of Assassin’s Creed gameplay and will not include the present-day story in it. It’s more supposed to just be about Basim and his life as becoming a Hidden One.
4. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
Set in the era of the Vikings, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is the most RPG-style Assassin’s Creed to date. It tells the story of Eivor, a Viking who becomes entrenched in the conflict between the Hidden Ones and the Order of the Ancients.
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla features quite a hefty amount of Norse mythology as well as Viking history. It’s also the biggest Assassin’s Creed game, with the main story taking 60 hours to beat.
5. Assassin’s Creed
The title that started it all, Assassin’s Creed follows the life of Master Assassin Altair who must regain his honor after breaking the tenants of the Creed. 300 years after Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed takes place in the Crusades and introduces the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars.
It introduces quite a bit about the narrative of Assassin’s Creed and introduces the more solidified present-day story with Desmond Miles.
6. Assassin’s Creed 2
Taking place in Renaissance Italy, Assassin’s Creed 2 follows the life of Ezio Auditore da Firenze as he becomes a member of the Assassins. He must thwart the Templar threat after it breaks his family apart. Assassin’s Creed 2 is often praised and called the best in the series.
Assassin’s Creed 2 features many improved gameplay features from its predecessor and benefits from a great environment and atmosphere.
7. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood
Following Ezio’s life again, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood takes place in Italy and shows as Ezio matures into a more powerful member of the Assassins. Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood also explores the world of Rome as Ezio tries to rebuild the Assassins there.
The game also continues Desmond’s present-day story as he searches for an ancient tool called the Apple of Eden.
8. Assassin’s Creed Revelations
Surprise, surprise, Ezio is back again. Assassin’s Creed Revelations follows the end of Ezio’s story and gives us closure on Altair’s story as well. An older, wiser Ezio travels to Constantinople (present-day Istanbul) to try and find keys to open Altair’s hidden library.
The title also reveals how Ezio impacts the rest of the Assassin’s Creed titles to come and his role in the overall story. Desmond is in this title as well and he tries to escape the Animus after being trapped inside.
9. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag
Taking place in the Golden Age of Piracy, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag follows the story of Edward Kenway as he becomes part of the Assassin-Templar conflict after unknowingly killing an Assassin. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is known for introducing naval combat to the series. It also gives us a glimpse at some of history’s most famous pirates.
The modern-day story features an unnamed Abstergo employee who must create a move by reliving Edward’s life.
10. Assassin’s Creed Rogue
Taking place after Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and before Assassin’s Creed 3, Assassin’s Creed Rogue is a bit of an interesting title. It’s a bit shorter than some of the other Assassin’s Creed games and it actually features a Templar at the helm.
Shay Cormac is an Irish-American Templar who used to be an Assassin, actually. We see more of Templar Grand Master Haytham Kenway, the son of Edward Kenway and father of Connor Kenway in this title as well.
11. Assassin’s Creed 3
Assassin’s Creed 3 takes place during the time of the American Revolution and follows the life of Native American Assassin, Connor Kenway. The son of Haytham Kenway, Connor must protect his people from the war and the First Civilization’s Grand Temple from the Templars.
The present-day story follows Desmond Miles and concludes his role in the franchise.
12. Assassin’s Creed Unity
Taking place in the French Revolution, Assassin’s Creed Unity follows the life of Arno Dorian, an Assassin who must figure out who murdered Templar Grand Master Francois De La Serre.
There’s a lot of history in this one, as well as a pretty strong romantic subplot between Arno and Elise. It’s also often regarded as one of the best Assassin’s Creed games mechanically, with lots of people praising its parkour and stealth gameplay.
The modern-day story is delivered through cutscenes only, however.
13. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is the last title on the list and takes place in the most recent time. It follows the story of Jacob and Evie Frye, twins living in Industrial England. The two fight against Templar control of London and seek out a Piece of Eden.
Lots of historical figures are introduced in Syndicate and the modern-day story continues from Assassin’s Creed Unity.
What’s Next For Assassin’s Creed?
So far, it is confirmed that the next Assassin’s Creed title is coming in 2023 and will be called Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
Assassin’s Creed Mirage will tell the story of Basim from Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and his time in the Hidden Ones while living in Baghdad (which is in modern-day Iraq).
Assassin’s Creed is also getting several new projects in the future, which include:
