6 Wattpad stories that became movies and TV shows

Wattpad is one of the biggest platforms for stories on the internet. With people from all over the world publishing free books and works of fanfiction for others to read, it’s a massive platform. Wattpad’s massive growth over the years has allowed for it to go to the big screens, with some Wattpad stories becoming full-fledged movies and TV shows.

Wattpad was founded back in Toronto in 2006 and sees a monthly audience of over 90 million users. It’s a pretty big website/app, so it’s no wonder that there are Wattpad stories out there that have been turned into movies or TV shows.

1. The Kissing Booth

Arguably the most known of the bunch, The Kissing Booth got its own Netflix movie adaptation. The original story was written by Beth Reekles on Wattpad. The story exploded in popularity and at the age of 17, she was offered a three-book deal with Penguin Random House.

Since then, The Kissing Booth was picked up by Netflix to be adapted into a Netflix original movie. It’s also gotten a sequel, The Kissing Booth 2. And a third movie, The Kissing Booth 3.

The Kissing Booth is basically about a girl named Elle who is best friends with Lee. The problem is, Lee has an attractive brother named Noah. And Elle and Lee have some rules that they follow to be friends (not sure why). One of those rules is that they can’t date each other’s relatives. Problem is, Elle really likes Noah. And you can imagine the rest.

2. After

After is actually a series of films based off of a Wattpad story. The Wattpad story was actually originally a Harry Styles fanfiction, if you can believe that. The story of After is that a good girl named Tessa Young is going to college. She’s loyal to her boyfriend, studies hard, and is pretty much what you’d expect from a Wattpad protagonist.

However, when she gets to college, she meets the brooding bad boy, Hardin Scott. Her life completely changes after meeting Hardin and she rebels, becoming a completely different person. It’s a pretty standard premise for a Wattpad story.

It’s also gotten four movies: After, After We Collided, After We Fall and After Ever Happy. I have no clue what more story there is left to tell about these two, but apparently there’s enough story to warrant four movies.

3. Cupid’s Match

Oh I wonder why Cupid's Match didn't get more than one episode

Cupid’s Match was originally a Wattpad story turned published novel by Lauren Palphreyman. Basically, the premise of Cupid’s Match is that a human being named Lila matches on a dating service with the real Cupid.

If you couldn’t guess by now, Cupid is a bad boy that really wants her. However, because he’s a mythical creature, Lila’s life is turned upside-down with tons of conflict and evil creatures.

The story did get adapted into a TV series back in 2018, but it never went beyond the pilot episode with no updates since. It’s probable that it just got dropped.

4. Light as a Feather

Light as a Feather was originally a Wattpad story turned TV show

Light as a Feather was a supernatural thriller TV series that aired from 2018 to 2019. It’s based off of a book by the same name that was originally once a Wattpad story. Light as a Feather follows the story of four best friends who invite a shy new girl out on Halloween. However, they quickly regret their decision when the shy girl suggests they play a game of Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.

The innocent game turns deadly and horrifying when the girls start dying off in the exact way that they were predicted to die. The survivors must figure out what evil force is hunting them down and why.

It’s a bit different than the rest of the stories we’ve seen so far, which is refreshing. However, it only got a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, it did actually run for a year, which is impressive.

5. Through My Window

Through my Window is a Netflix movie based off of a Wattpad story

Through My Window is actually a Spanish movie based off of a novel by Ariana Godoy. It was also originally a Wattpad story once. Obviously it was, otherwise it wouldn’t be on this list.

Through My Window is a story about a woman named Raquel who was a pretty big crush on her very attractive neighbor, Ares. She secretly watches him (not creepy at all), but has never spoken with him before. Still, the entire objective of the movie is for Raquel to get him to fall in love with her.

It’s available on Netflix too, since it’s a Netflix Original. However, it doesn’t really look like many people enjoyed it. It only got a 5.4/10 on IMDb.

6. Death is My BFF

This one isn’t out yet, but back in 2019, it was announced that Death is My BFF was in the works at Syfy to become a TV series. Death is My BFF was a series of books by Katarina Tonks and is a coming-of-age story about a girl named Faith Williams. She’s a normal girl, but on the eve of her 18th birthday she discovers a prophecy that makes her responsible for the balance between good and evil on Earth.

However, her task is complicated by the Angel of Death, who is apparently very attractive. The Grim Reaper is tasked with collecting Faith’s soul and taking it to the Underworld. She must evade Death and fight off evil spirits all while navigating her senior year in high school. I guess it’s a love story about Death. Interesting?

Anyways, the rights to the books were acquired by Sony TV a while ago. Back in 2019, it was under very early development at Syfy. No word has been given just yet on when to expect it, but considering its popularity, it’s probably happening in the future.
