HBO Max is planning on removing 36 titles from its streaming service, including 20 HBO Max originals.
In a report by Variety, the move is a part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform merge that will combine both HBO Max and Discovery+.
A statement from HBO Max states that “as we work toward bringing out content catalogs together under one platform, we will be making changes to the content offering available on both HBO Max and Discovery+. That will include the removal of some content from both platforms.”
HBO Max has already removed a few movies. The next wave of removals is not slated for a specific date yet, but it seems like the move is part of the ongoing cost-cutting happening at the company. Already, 17% of HBO’s workforce has been laid off.
HBO Max was also the center of uproar after Warner Bros. decided to scrap the upcoming Batgirl movie, despite its $90 million budget and its status as being in post-production. It was set to stream on HBO Max upon release instead of theaters. However, the new management stated that it was a part of the company’s efforts to produce films for theaters and not streaming services.
