CD Projekt Red is already laying down the foundation for its Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, currently codenamed Orion. The Polish-based video game studio and publisher is looking to open a new studio in the United States and hire hundreds of developers for the project.
During an investors’ call after the announcements of Orion and several Witcher games, CD Projekt Red CFO Piotr Nielubowicz said he expects 350 to 500 developers will ne needed to properly create Orion.
The new studio will open in Boston, Massachusetts. It will combine with its current Vancouver office and be known as CD Projekt Red North America.
Talent from its Polish studios will assist with Orion, including Cyberpunk 2077 quest designer Pawel Sasko, who will be moving to Boston for it. The Vancouver studio had only about 12 members when it was acquired last year by CD Projekt Red. In order to obtain the hundreds of new staff, the company has already begun an advertising push on its website.
Nielubowicz said that “the North American studio will consist of teams working from Boston and the team working from Vancouver. The project will also be supported by developers from Poland.
“As for the total headcount required for such a production, I believe the best reference is Cyberpunk 2077, our most recent release and a good reference point when thinking about development headcount and future projects of this scale. I think it’s safe to assume that between 350 and 500 developers should be required.”
Development has not begun just yet, but CD Projekt Red promised that Orion will be “the next Cyberpunk game that will fully unleash the potential that this universe offers.”
CD Projekt Red is still working on the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, which should release in 2023. The announced Witcher games will likely not be here for many years to come.
