Call of Duty is returning to the Modern Warfare franchise, with its 2022 title being a sequel to Modern Warfare 2019. There will also be a new Warzone experience releasing with the new sequel. The two will be designed on new engines “from the ground up.”
According to the official Call of Duty twitter account, there will be a new playspace and sandbox mode added. Development of both will be led by Infinity Ward, who also worked on Modern Warfare 2019 and Warzone.
Rumors last year regarding the new title revealed a potential morality system and more gritty realism, however there has been no official word from Activision Blizzard regarding the game’s details. We expect more will be revealed and announced in the upcoming months.
Call of Duty: Vanguard and Warzone will also be receiving content updates in preparation for Season 2, which goes live on February 14. The Warzone Season 2 patch will fix more than 30 glitches and other quality concerns like voice chat issues and issues with Modern Warfare 2019’s multiplayer that had previously left the game in a broken state.
The Warzone developers also stated that they were unhappy with the state of the game and that they admitted to essentially breaking it. Infinity Ward co-studio head Pat Kelly stated that Warzone was not initially supposed to be a live-service that spanned across several franchise titles. The decision to do so has left the game in a difficult state, with development challenges.
These issues and more will most likely be fixed and addressed once Warzone 2 launches alongside the 2022 Call of Duty title.
