Batgirl was set to be a feature film for the DC comics character, but has now been scrapped by Warner Bros. It will not premiere on any streaming platforms or in theaters either.

The production was totaled at $90 million and starred Leslie Grace as Batgirl or Barbara Gordon. It was directed by filmmakers Adil El Arbi (Bad Boys for Life) and Bilall Fallah (Ms. Marvel). Back in 2021, the film was given the green light to be produced and was part of an effort to create films specifically for HBO Max.

However, Warner Bros. has shifted its corporate strategy, and it’s left Batgirl in the dust along with the old strategy.

Insiders at the studio claim that the decision was not due to Batgirl’s quality or the commitment of filmmakers, but rather that it was a result of Warner Bros. desiring films to be played globally in theaters. Batgirl had been in post-production and reached a price of $90 million due to COVID-related delays and protocols.

However, many have found themselves perplexed and shocked at the decision to completely scrap the entire project. It is standard in the industry to at least attempt to get some level of return on a project, but Warner Bros. has gone against this status quo.

Batgirl was also featured big names like J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, and Brendan Fraser. Leslie Grace had even been in preliminary discussions with the filmmakers on a potential sequel. Grace had said that the movie was full of ”crazy stunts, crazy drops. She’s a biker chick, so you’re going to see her do a bunch of badassery.”
