2022’s newest horror film, Barbarian, has surpassed expectations at the box office after it made around $3.8 million on Friday night, putting it at the number one spot in theaters.
The movie has received strong ratings and reviews, and analysts expect it to have an opening weekend of anywhere between $9 and $10 million. This is well above the expected opening of $5 to $6 million for the weekend, although the official numbers aren’t in yet. Whether it surpasses expectations or not however, it will nonetheless top the charts for the weekend.
The 20th Century movie launched in 2,340 theaters, and statistically most of its audience sat in the age range of 18 to 34. However, even with positive critic reviews the film only managed to garner a C+ among its fans. Barbarian got a 93 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The movie tells the story of a young woman, played by Georgina Campbell, coming late at night to a rental home in Detroit, only to find out someone else is living there. The unwanted guest is played by Bill Skarsgard, who also played Pennywise in the It movie series.
As things stand September of this year is a slow cooldown from the rapid-fire box office season earlier this year, with big release such as Jurassic World Dominion and Top Gun: Maverick. This weekend’s total revenue will sit at around $39 million dollars, and although September is usually a slower part of the year for cinemas, it is still 35.3% less than last year, and over 70% lower than 2019.
