Leslye Headland’s show The Acolyte is among many of the secret projects planned for Star Wars’ expansion on Disney’s streaming network, Disney+.
The show, which takes place during the age of the High Republic and around a century before The Phantom Menace, will take a deep dive into an era where the Sith were practically extinct.
The project has been in development under Headland for about two years now, and she’s served as both the writer and the showrunner. Shooting will begin later this year however, with predictions of the show’s release date being set somewhere around May of next year.

The show’s filming will begin in London, with Loki director Kate Herron behind the camera for the first period of the show’s filming, as rumored by many fans.
Lucasfilm and Disney have been busy at work, developing the show’s cast, seeing as the date to begin work on the show is in October. However, for the show’s lead role, as the acolyte, Star Wars has already had their answer.
As revealed on their Twitter recently, Amandla Stenberg will be the lead star of the show.
Stenberg and Star Wars
Stenberg’s casting as the show’s lead role has actually been in talks for months now. The actor, known for her role in the Hunger Games franchise, will need to learn all kinds of heavy martial arts moves, as she will be her own stuntman. Considering her role is that of a Sith lord, this may prove a difficult task.
However, Stenberg is an already-huge Star Wars fan, meaning she may have an established understanding of the history and context behind both the show and her role. Based off of an excited post she shared on her Instagram following the announcement, it’s clear Stenberg is ready for the role and up to the task.
The Acolyte was the studios’ largest and most-anticipated Comic-Con 2022 reveal, however it may be one of many shows coming to Disney+.
