Yes, you read that right.

Illumination studios’ newest film, Minions: Rise of Gru, has made $127.9 million over its four-day opening at the Box Office, and is on track to get well over $200 million globally by the end of today. Of this, it’s expected that $86 million will come from overseas.

The movie tells the origin story of how supervillain Gru, the main character throughout the franchise, met the both lovable and irritating yellow creatures known as ‘Minions.’ It boasts an impressive cast with huge names like Steve Carell, Russel Brand, Alan Arkin, Danny Trejo, and many more.

The children’s film is currently flexing one of the highest starts for an animated film in Hollywood history. On Friday it grossed some $48 million, of it $10.8 million from previews.

It’s a pretty big deal, as the pandemic-era has not been too kind to animated children’s films. Disney’s Lightyear only grossed some $51 million when it opened last month, and fell out of consumer’s interest shortly afterwards.

Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has thus far held the largest opening day for any family movie release during the pandemic, with a massive $72 million. However, that number’s since been destroyed by the newest installment in the Despicable Me franchise.

In fact, Minions 2 holds the record for the strongest July 4th opening in all of Hollywood.

The biggest July 4th openings ever have been Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011), which earned $115.9 million, while Spider-Man 2 (2004), earned $115.8 million. Third on the list is, believe it or not, Despicable Me 3 (2017) which made $99 million.

But this isn’t as shocking as it is impressive. The Despicable Me franchise is the highest-grossing animated film franchise in history. The newest film is a sequel to the 2015 hit film Minions, which earned a whopping $1.159 billion in global sales. The newest film is only slightly behind its predecessor.

Another record has been smashed however, as the film is now the tenth Hollywood film in history to make over $100 million at its debut, alongside it films like Incredibles 2.
