Scream has been off to a strong start in the box office. Grossing $13 million on opening night, it is projected to make $30 million on its opening weekend and $36 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. If this happens, it would dethrone ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home,’ which is projected to earn $28 million in its fifth weekend in theaters.
The franchise saw a hit in popularity back when Scream 4 released in 2011. The film was criticized strongly and grossed $38 million in the United States during its entire run in theaters. The sudden spark in Scream’s popularity could potentially revive the series.
However, Spider-Man: No Way Home is still one of the biggest films in the box office, scoring the title of being the first film to gross over $1 billion in the COVID era. The film was highly praised and widely beloved as it brought back villains and heroes of past films. It even prompted calls to revive The Amazing Spider-Man by fans who enjoyed Andrew Garfield’s performance in the film. It is currently only second to Avengers: Endgame, which is the highest grossing film ever.
Fans of Scream will definitely be pleased to hear that their film is doing wonderful in the box office. The fifth installment to the franchise has been labeled its bloodiest and most intense yet. The film circles back to the town of Woodsboro, 25 years after the events of the original 1996 film. After the death of director Wes Craven, many were concerned that the series would lose its spark. However, in what has been described as a relaunch more than a sequel, the film has clearly captivated and impressed audiences globally.
