My Happy Marriage Episode 4 was recently released and wow, I genuinely loved it! In all honesty, I can not believe how much I am enjoying this show! In this episode, viewers get a ton of content regarding Miyo’s past as well as some surprising characters who were finally introduced. We also get some sweet moments from Kudo and his intentions with Miyo as well as a looming threat at the end that threatens to destroy it all. With episode 5 right around the corner, I think it’s time to reflect a bit on this past episode to understand what’s going on for the new episode’s release!
Episode Summary
The episode starts with another nightmare from Miyo in which she sees her father mistreating her mother after her mother pleaded with him to give Miyo more time to find her supernatural abilities. He then goes as far as saying that, if they were some mediocre family, he wouldn’t care about supernatural abilities and could MAYBE love Miyo. Like, come on. He never ceases to annoy me, huh?
Her mother apologizes for not having much time left and being unable to protect her which is where the dream ends.
Miyo wakes up and asks Yurie, Kiyoka’s maid, to help her find a gift to give Kiyoka, who she calls her ‘husband-to-be,’ which like, major points for their relationship!
Yurie suggests Miyo make something herself rather than buy a gift and gives her a book of a bunch of knit goods that she could make by hand. Looking through the book, she decides to make a kumihimo cord which will act like a hair tye for Kiyoka.
Imagining how nice he will look with it, she decided to go to Kiyoka and ask if she can go shopping alone that day to buy the threads for his gift, without telling him about that, of course, and says that Yurie will accompany her. Kiyoka, being the stoic but overprotective guy he is offers to go with her on another day and she denies it, causing him to warn her to be careful and step out of the room.
Right before he’s about to leave, he gives her an amulet that’s purpose is unexplained but is assumed to offer protection of some sort as he makes sure to understand that she always keeps it on her with a stern look. He has a concerned look and then lets out a sigh before leaving, causing Miyo to even recognize with a smile that he’s being overprotective (hehe).
We then switch to Koji’s perspective in which we finally get an older brother reveal and see who Miyo was supposed to marry. And he’s a total goofy douchebag and makes fun of Koji because of the engagement situation. We see him silencing Koji with just the move of his hand, making me wonder if that’s his power. Overall, I still am very much supporting the ship between Miyo and Kiyoka. She did not miss out on ANYTHING. Anyway, this older brother dude would be a perfect match for Kaya.
We switch back to Miyo to see her in the town where she chooses a beautiful combination of string consisting of yellow and dark purple. Yurie then remembers that she needs to purchase salt, instructing Miyo to wait for her outside of the store. As she waits, guess who shows up!
It’s evil Kaya! And she’s accompanied by Koji of course.
In the midst of this, we suddenly get switched to Kudo’s perspective when we suddenly see him in Miyo’s home where he’s having a meeting with her father, Shinichi, and her stepmother. He states that he knows how they mistreated Miyo and that he plans to be officially engaged with her (YES) and marry her in the future (WOOOOO!!!)
Kiyoka then sets them in their place and basically says that he is hesitant to give them anything for the marriage, unlike traditional ones between two families.
Back to Miyo’s perspective, Kaya starts bullying her about being “abandoned” by Kiyoka, which, if only you knew! Koji tells her to stop and she tells him, to keep quiet, continuing to jest and bully Miyo.
Back to Kudo, he sets up a deal in which he will pay for the betrothal if her parents will apologize to her face-to-face like YES, good husband material right there. He states that he won’t force them, but he will cut ties with them if they do not.
Back to Miyo, Kaya basically tells her to start begging for help and pretty much looks like an idiot from the viewer’s perspective. Miyo still gets scared and apologizes, falling back on her old habits. Yurie then comes out and saves the day because she’s amazing, questioning if Kaya and Koji are acquaintances. Kaya introduces herself, asking if Yurie is a fellow worker of Miyo to which Yurie says Miyo is Kiyoka’s future wife and she works for her. MAN, this episode is just making me love the different characters!
Kaya is shocked along with Koji as Yurie and Miyo excuse themselves.
Back to Kiyoka, he says he’ll give Miyo’s parents a little time to think.
From Miyo’s perspective once more, we can see her at home still saddened by the events of that day. She says she hates herself for being like this before retreating to her room.
Switching to Kaya, we see her returning home as she rants angrily to Koji. On her way home, she passes by Kiyoka on the path thinking, “What a beautiful man.” Oh no.
Kiyoka heads home to find Miyo saddened as she welcomes him. Later, by themselves, Yurie explains the situation and how it saddened Miyo.
He heads to her room afterward where Miyo is sitting in the corner and stands outside the door, telling her that what’s worrying her will not last and that she can tell him anything. WOW, HE’S AMAZING.
In his room later, Kiyoka contemplates how to give her a bit of confidence and, with Yurie’s advice, ends up with the solution of needing to give her lots of love (hehe). Switching between shots of Miyo and Kiyoka, we see Miyo making him the gift as the narration of Yurie’s advice plays.
Miyo finishes the kumihimo cord but contemplates giving it to him. Then we get another surprise visit from her old maid Hana, that was introduced in the second episode. After a heartwarming reunion, we find out that Hana was married and is now a mother to which Miyo smiles, making Hana happy. She asks Miyo if she’s happy now, to which Miyo breaks down crying saying she does not deserve to be happy or Kiyoka’s wife due to her lack of abilities.
Then it is revealed that Kiyoka is actually the one who invited Hana in the first place! To this, she questions if Kiyoka already knows everything about her and her lack of abilities. Hana confirms this and helps her gain a bit of courage.
Miyo rushes over to Kiyoka and FINALLY! ONE OF MY PREDICTIONS IS RIGHT!
She goes over and confesses to not having abilities as well as explains how her family treated her in the past. Bowing down as a form of respect, she continues by saying that she wanted to thank him for what he had done in episode 3 and gives him the gift as a thank-you. Afterward, she asks him to give his decision to her words.
He comes over to her and places a hand on her shoulder, telling her that he needs her to stay with him and reveals that they will be formally engaged soon (AHH YESS!) He hugs her and asks if she wants to stay with him to which she buries her head in his shoulder and says she would with his permission. (I LOVE THIS SCENE.)
He says he is the one that wants her and pulls away, asking her to tie his hair with the gift she made. He smiles at the sight of it in his hair and says he will use it with care causing Miyo to blush and smile back.
Saying farewell to Hana, she thanks her greatly.
We then see a shot of the sky in which a few shiki-gami are shown, like the ones seen at the end of the third episode. It is revealed that they allow the user to see what is happening in the eyes of the shiki-gami to which we see a shot of Koji’s father, the one who is controlling them, reacting angrily at seeing Miyo and Kudo getting along with each other. He devises a plan to use Kaya to his advantage in order to force Miyo to marry into their family.
Episode Review
This episode was amazing and I can confidently say that thankfully, that has become the norm for this show. Like in episode 3, it was nice to see the heartwarming content between Miyo and Kiyoka and see him FINALLY want to take their relationship further into an official engagement (I’m over here acting like it’s not only still episode 4). I’m super excited for tomorrow’s episode and can’t wait to see if Kiyoka will decide to officially announce their engagement then!
Theories
Episode 4 of My Happy Marriage gave me a ton of speculations and ideas of the future for the show that, unfortunately, all seem bad for Miyo and Kiyoka.
First off, there’s the issue with Koji’s older brother and the fact that he was supposed to be the one to marry Miyo. While I am unsure if he will do something about it since he seems to be a loser, I’m sure the brothers’ father will. He seems to be plotting to use Kaya to his advantage and use her like a ‘puppet’ to his advantage in separating Miyo and Kiyoka to have Miyo come to marry Koji’s brother.
In terms of if Kaya will agree, she most likely will. It was clear that she was shocked when she found out that Miyo was still with Kiyoka and was trying to bully her for supposedly being abandoned by him, meaning she really does hope that Kiyoka will want nothing to do with her.
Alongside this, there is also the possibility of jealousy on Kaya’s part coming into the ordeal. While she does seem satisfied with Koji as someone she can push around, there was clearly something going on in the way she admired Kiyoka as he left. It wasn’t clear whether she knew if that was Kiyoka or not (something I’m guessing we’ll see in episode 5) but she definitely thought he was more handsome than Koji. As a result, she probably will accept helping Koji’s father. I do wonder if she’ll set some conditions of her own or something if they do end up making a deal as Kaya is clearly a person with her best interests and wants in mind and might prioritize that when working with Koji’s father.
I do believe that Kiyoka will take the next step in episode 5 and eventually announce an official engagement between him and Miyo, especially since he explicitly told her and their relationship is moving a bit faster through the episodes. At the same time, I’m wondering what Miyo’s parents will do if this comes. I’m assuming that they likely won’t apologize, seeing how Miyo’s father was saying he abandoned his daughter when speaking to Koji’s father in episode 3. Yet, the betrothal money involved may make a difference in their opinion. At the moment, I can’t make a clear decision as Miyo’s parents’ reactions were slightly guarded since they were speaking to Kiyoka and I hope we’ll see their decision in episode 5!
At the end of the day, I am still wondering if Miyo will receive her powers later on in the story and if her lack of them might have to do with the abusive state of her family growing up. While learning about the fact that her mother’s family is that of mind controllers, as explained in episode 3, we got a motive for Koji’s father’s actions in wanting Miyo in his family and a bit of exposition to Miyo’s mother.
But, I’m hoping this might mean more for Miyo in the future of My Happy Marriage! Episode 4’s light mention of the matter of Miyo’s mother in the beginning makes me doubt anything drastic will happen with this will happen in episode 5 since there already is so much to cover but, I’m hopeful we’ll see at least an expansion of the powers and their use.
After all, if Miyo’s mother had the power, why wouldn’t she use it at all to help her abusive situation with Shinichi? Is it that she’s just a kind soul like Miyo is, or is it something else? Also, I wonder if there will be something behind her words at the beginning of the episode where she tells Miyo that she doesn’t have time left and apologizes. I’m wondering if this is an actual memory or just a distorted memory warped into a dream.
My Overall Rating
My Happy Marriage Episode 4 was great as always and this show has been surprising me with how enjoyable of a watch it is! It was nice that we got a Hana reveal and status update as well as a reveal of Koji’s older brother (who is somehow less likable than Koji). We got a ton of great content about Kiyoka and Miyo and I am super excited to see how their relationship continues to improve! Despite it definitely being against their relationship, I am still sitting in anticipation wondering what Koji’s father’s next move will be!
The only thing I would really say to improve on would be the pacing of the episode as the sudden introduction of Hana back into Miyo’s life felt a bit rushed and sudden.
My Rating: 9/10
