Episode 3 of The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today has left me very, very saddened. And no, not because this episode was bad or anything–in fact, it was pretty funny! But, I was expecting the whole aquarium thing in this episode that was introduced at the end of episode 2, and well…looks like I’ll have to wait another week to see that. The creators of this show have crushed my heart as well as all the excited predictions I set up in my last review.

But alas, I am definitely going to keep watching this show. I guess that’s just the power of the Masterful Cat.

Episode Summary

Speaking of the Masterful Cat, this episode starts with some beautiful narration from him! He details his main concerns being about how Fukuzawa, his owner, (who we learn is 27 in this episode) is completely useless and has no skills in his eyes. She struggles to even separate the types of trash, causing Yukichi to question why, in English even in the original Japanese voice-acting, “Why homo-sapiens?!” He even calls crows smarter than her. He seems decided on leaving her if she ever loses her job.

But, when she beams at his food, he clearly softens, showing that, despite the consistent belittling insults and names for her he has in his mind, he still loves Fukuzawa.

The next day appears to be a weekend, sadly not the saturday of her visit to the aquarium with Orizuka (so I’ll go lament again), and Fukuzawa shocks Yukichi by asking him to teach her how to cook. But, as a twist, she is wearing full on fire protection gear with an extinguisher and goggles.

Yukichi originally declines but, after acknowledging that she is worthless and mentioning that her coworkers believe she can cook, as seen in episode 1, he finally agrees. His first recipe for her is a simple bowl of rice with a raw egg.

For the recipe, he makes the rice, leaving only cracking the egg to Fukuzawa. She fails at this, getting a ton of egg shells in the meal. Yukichi expertly picks them out and they add the one topping to the bowl. The final step is to add a drizzle of soy sauce, to which Fukuzawa adds probably about half the bottle, creating a pool of soy sauce over the rice.

She looks back to find something easier in the cookbook, realizing that it is Yukichi’s old one from when he first came to her house. She ends up asking him to make rice balls, the first meal he ever created for her and turned her failed rice and egg bowl into a porridge.

The next morning seems to start as usual for Yukichi, until everything goes wrong. He breaks an egg wrongly while making breakfast after seeing a fly, hits his paw on a table, and Fukuzawa accidentally steps on his tail.

As she goes to work, he goes to collect the laundry as he sees that there were tissues left in the laundry, spreading over all the clothes. He goes to angrily hang the laundry up and, right as he finishes, it begins to rain horribly all of a sudden, causing him to have to rewash everything.

To calm down, he has a snack and looks at the amount saved in Fukuzawa’s bank account.

On the news, Fukuzawa is interviewed about the storm. When the reporter asks if she always has her umbrella on her, Fukuzawa says yes and, when the reporter says it is nice to have someone at home to pack it for her, Fukuzawa says she is always greatful to have him. Since she is speaking indirectly about Yukichi, he is shocked and when Fukuzawa gets home, gives her an extremely special dinner with premium beer.

The morning after, he wakes up to find Fukuzawa already awake with a fever, despite her denying it. She says she needs to go to work but Yukichi forces her to sleep and relax, making her call in sick for half the day. She seems to want to sweat off the fever which Yukichi knows won’t help, causing him to force her back into laying down.

Fukuzawa awakes to find Yukichi asleep beside her, seemingly feeling bad about leaving her to do his chores. She feels that her fever went down but is still exhausted, leading to her getting the full day off of work.

Episode Review

Overall, episode 3 of The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today wasn’t bad. It was pretty funny at some points and there was a lot of expansion in the friendship and almost family-like relationship that has grown between Fukuzawa and Yukichi but, it seemed mostly like a filler. I am still definitely annoyed that I’ll have to wait another week! JK, but in all seriousness, this episode didn’t have much too it.

It was pretty funny to see how bad Fukuzawa is at pretty much everything other than work as well as the slandering commentary that came From Yukichi as a result. At the same time, it was nice to see him softening eventually at the different points in the episode, revealing that he isn’t as harsh to her in reality as he seems to be in his mind.

This episode didn’t really bring in any theories since it didn’t have much of anything substantial. It did show how Fukuzawa seems to be wanting to bring a bit of a change in her life but, still just seems to relax with Yukichi at the end. I’m hoping that she does learn how to at least crack an egg right in the coming episodes though!

The pacing of this episode was pretty nice and I was glad that it didn’t linger on the different smaller events that took place. All in all, it just felt a bit repetitive from the other two episodes with no exciting developments truly happening. I do, of course, understand that every show has fillers but, unfortunately, this kind of felt like it was too early into the show and the development of the plotline for it to be a filler, leaving it to be, while heartwarming and fun, a pretty unmemorable episode.

My Overall Review

Rating: 5/10

Rating: 5 out of 10.

Episode 3 of the The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today wasn’t bad but wasn’t the greatest from what I’ve seen from the other episodes in. Overall, I’m still super excited for the aquarium episode coming next week!
