It’s official, Mortal Kombat 1 is coming soon! With a new roster of favorite fighters, a brand new storyline, and tons of action to be held, this is definitely going to be a highly-anticipated game for 2023. The trailer features some great visuals, familiar faces, and plenty of Mortal Kombat gore. With its September release coming up faster than you’d expect, here is everything we know so far about Mortal Kombat 1:
Release Date
Mortal Kombat 1 is set to launch on September 18, 2023. If you preorder the special editions of the game, you can get early access starting on September 14. That gives you quite a couple of extra days to get some playtime in on Mortal Kombat 1.
Storyline
The end of Mortal Kombat 11 and its Aftermath expansion saw time get a reset with by Liu Kang using Kronika’s Hourglass mechanism. In this timeline dubbed the New Era, Liu Kang servers as the protector. The New Era also features familiar characters in reimagined roles. However, as seen in the reveal trailer, there are still some characters like Shang Tsung that just won’t change.
Confirmed Platforms
Mortal Kombat 1 will be available to play on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. There will be no version for the PS4 or Xbox One. The Nintendo Switch edition will be available as well. NetherRealm is providing oversight on the Nintendo Switch version and development is being led by Shiver Entertainment and Saber Interactive. QLOC is working on development for the PC edition of the game.
Beta and Early Access
If you preorder Mortal Kombat 1, you’ll get access to the Mortal Kombat 1 beta in August. Early access is September 14 for special editions, as was mentioned earlier. However, the beta is only available for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S editions of the game.
The beta officially runs from August 18 to August 21.
What New Gameplay Systems Are There?
NetherRealm hasn’t revealed gameplay yet, but Mortal Kombat 1 is set to feature a new fighting system, game modes, insane finishing movies, and much more. The Kameo Fighters system is one of these new ones and is a selection of partners who will assist you during matches and are separately chosen from the main fighting roster.
Who’s Going to be in Mortal Kombat 1?
NetherRealm has confirmed that the roster of fighters will include established characters from the early Mortal Kombat games. Johnny Cage will be in the game, but he did not make an appearance in the trailer. A downloadable skin for Jean-Claude Van Damme will be available for Cage as well.

Editions
Mortal Kombat 1 preorders will unlock Shang Tsung as a playable character. The more expensive editions will include DLC and potentially even physical items, but this depends on which edition you buy. Here are all three confirmed editions so far:

In terms of pricing, the base game will retail at $70. The Premium Edition is $110 and the Kollector’s Edition is $250. The Dragon Krystals are the in-game currency but exact pricing is unknown.
