Avatar: The Way of Water has now crossed $1.89 billion in the global box office. It is close to becoming the sixth-biggest global release in box office history, nearly over Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $1.91 billion.
In a report by Variety, Avatar: The Way of Water has made over $31.1 million across the weekend in North America. It is also expected to bring in $38.5 million total over the weekend, including Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 16). In North America alone, Avatar 2 has brought in over $570 million.
If Avatar: The Way of Water continues to perform at the rate it is performing at, it may overtake Avengers: Infinity War. The Marvel film had made $2.04 billion in the global box office.
M3GAN also continued its streak of earning big bucks, taking second place with $17.9 million–an estimated $21.2 million total over the holiday weekend. It was a drop of about 40% from its opening weekend, which is considered a good figure for a horror movie.
Internationally, M3GAN made $15.4 million, pushing the global box office total to $90 million.
In third place was Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, making $13.4 million domestically. Tom Hanks’ A Man Called Otto opened to $12. 6 million, coming in at fourth place. In fifth place was Gerard Butler’s Plane, totaling about $10 million in its opening weekend.
