The Daily Show host Trevor Noah has announced his exit from the show after seven years.
At the end of his show on Thursday, Noah confirmed his departure stating that he was “filled with gratitude for the journey” but wants to “carry on exploring” another part of his life.
“It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s something that I never expected, and I found myself thinking throughout the time of everything we’ve gone through. The Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the journey…more pandemic and I realized that after the seven years, my time is up.”
After John Stewart resigned from The Daily Show in 2015, Trevor Noah was placed as the host. At the time, he was still relatively unknown to American audiences, being a standup comedian from South Africa. He had made appearances on The Tonight Show, The Late Night Show with David Letterman, and other UK panels.
He continued, saying that “I want to say thank you to you, to you who watched this. I never dreamed that I would be here. I sort of feel like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I came here for a tour of what the previous show was and then the next thing you know I was handed the keys.”
Noah seemed to hint that he wanted to explore returning to standup. “I spent two years in my apartment, not on the road, standup was done. And when I got back out there again, I realized there’s another part of my life that I want to carry on exploring. I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and putting on shows.”
He thanked fans and Comedy Central, saying that “[the show has] been one of my greatest challenges, it’s been one of my greatest joys.”
He did not reveal exactly when he will be leaving. Instead, Noah said that “it’s not instant, I’m not disappearing, don’t worry. If I owe you money, I’ll still pay you.”
