Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that it will purchase Bungie for $3.6 Billion. Bungie, the original developers of Halo and now the developer of the popular Destiny franchise, is the latest in recent acquisitions made by these massive tech companies.

Bungie will, however, remain “an independent subsidiary” of Sony and will be able to remain multiplatform, with the option to “self-publish and reach players where they choose to play.”

Sony president CEO Jim Ryan said:

“We’ve had a strong partnership with Bungie since the inception of the Destiny franchise, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to officially welcome the studio to the PlayStation family.”

He reiterated, however, that Bungie will remain multiplatform and independent as a studio.

Bungie has lately been focusing more on their free-to-play shooter Destiny 2, which has still been a popular game amongst players of all platforms.

This comes just weeks after Microsoft announced its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for nearly $70 billion. Microsoft confirmed that at least the next three Call of Duty titles would remain multiplatform. However, the future of exclusives is still yet to be seen.
