The new fantasy-themed battle royale, despite its best efforts, wasn’t able to stay afloat in the vast market of gaming. Spellbreak was a game that attempted to redefine the idea of a battle royal by swapping out the traditional guns and automated weapons with gauntlets and fantasy weapons.

The game, developed by Proletariat back in late 2020 on the Steam store, garnered a massive five million players in just three weeks. However, that initial success didn’t translate any further and it quickly went down in popularity.

The game hasn’t had a single update since September of 2021. The move has been made to pull the plug on the project after less than three years.

“Unfortunately, the game industry is a difficult business,” CEO Seth Sivak wrote in a post on social media app Redd. “Spellbreak was not able to break through and reach a sustainable place where we could continue to invest in it the way we had dreamed of. We picked a hard path as an independent studio and decided to compete with some of the biggest games in the world. While we could not get the escape velocity needed, I do not regret the bold decisions we made in bringing Spellbreak to life.

“While this is goodbye for Spellbreak, I cannot thank this community enough for the support and help along the way. Spellbreak transformed our studio and touched the lives of so many. So again, thank you.”

The company has already made preparations for their closure, including disabling money-based transactions.
