Amazon’s newest fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has seen the largest viewership for a premier in Amazon Prime history, getting over 25 million viewers on its first day of streaming.
Just last week HBO Max’s House of the Dragon of the Game of Thrones franchise managed to bring in over 10 million premier-day viewers, something unprecedented. However Amazon’s newest series has broken that record by more than double.
The show, which is TV’s most expensive series ever produced, gets its story from one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings books. “It is somehow fitting that Tolkien’s stories – among the most popular of all time, and what many consider to be the true origin of the fantasy genre – have led us to this proud moment,” said Amazon Studios’ head Jennifer Salke.
During the show’s premiere in the U.K., Amazon’s founder and CEO Jeff Bezos jokingly told reporters that his sons told him specifically “don’t eff this up” in regards to the show’s production.
Episodes will continue coming out weekly.
