The Last of Us has become one of HBO’s most popular shows and is considered one of the best video game TV adaptations yet. Debuting on Sunday night, The Last of Us has now become HBO’s second-best debut of the last decade, with 4.7 million viewers watching the premiere.
As reported by Deadline, the TV adaptation for The Last of Us is just behind House of the Dragon since Boardwalk Empire launched on the network to 4.81 million viewers back in 2010.
House of the Dragon, a spinoff of Game of Thrones, saw a nearly 10 million debut when it premiered last year. The Last of Us got 4.7 million over the past weekend. According to HBO, this figure represents “20%-40% of the show’s total gross audience per episode.”
The adaptation, which was made by Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, is considered one of the few media adaptations of a video game that succeeded. Despite the fact that the series “deviate[s] greatly” from the original game, it still managed to do well.
“our focus was simply to make the best possible adaptation of this beloved story for as big an audience as we could,” said Mazin and Druckmann. “We are overjoyed to see how many fans, both old and new, have welcomed The Last of Us into their homes and their hearts.”
The Last of Us takes place in a world where modern civilization has been destroyed. 20 years after this destruction, Joel and Ellie travel across the United States in the hopes that they find a cure to a sickness that has wiped out the population.
A second season has not yet been confirmed, but if it does release, it would cover the events of The Last of Us Part 2.
