Nintendo has acquired CG production company, Dynamo Pictures, and will rename it to Nintendo Pictures in a bid to expand the Nintendo brand. The new acquisition will “focus on development of visual content using Nintendo IP.”
Dynamo Pictures has previously worked on titles like Death Stranding and Persona 5 in motion capture.
The acquisition comes as Nintendo is readying for a major cinematic release with its animated movie based on the Super Mario Bros. that is set to star Chris Pratt. The film is slated to release in Spring 2023, nearly 30 years after the last cinematic adaptation of Mario.
It seems like more video games have been adapted to cinema and TV. Sonic the Hedgehog’s movie sequel was released earlier this year and a new TV show for The Last of Us is in production at HBO. A new Fallout show is coming some time in the future as well. Sony also recently released a film based off of its hit Uncharted franchise.
Nintendo has confirmed that it will be acquiring 100 percent of the outstanding shares of Dynamo Pictures, and that the studio will be a wholly owned subsidiary of Nintendo. The acquisition is expected to close on October 3rd, 2022.
Although it is not clear what this means for Nintendo in specifics, it seems apparent that Nintendo is catching onto the wave of video game to movie adaptations. Although video games being adapted into film was previously frowned upon, it seems that fans are becoming more open to the idea of getting movies based off of their favorite games.
