Digital Extremes, the team behind the popular Warframe, is now working on a new game. Set to be a free-to-play MMO in a fantasy world, Soulframe is the next project underway at Digital Extremes. The teaser trailer and some sparse details are all that’s known so far, but many are interested and excited in this new project.
An interview between The Washington Post and creative director Geoff Crookes reveals that the game draws inspiration from classics like The NeverEnding Story and Princess Mononoke. Soulframe is set to explore the story of humans colliding with the natural world.
“The conceit is that the world itself is a little angry about what’s been done to it, and the grounds underneath tend to shift throughout the day. So there’s going to be proceduralism within the cave networks and crevasses and so on underneath the world.”
Gameplay-wise, Soulframe will focus on “slow and heavy” melee combat. Crookes said that the game was not intended to be a Soulslike game when work began on the project. With the recent release of Elden Ring, that may change.
“Elden Ring has absolutely been a subject of some conversation — maybe to do with camera, maybe to do with how excellent their combat pacing is. And you know, screw those guys, because damn, [Elden Ring] was absolutely fantastic.”
No specific release date has been give on Soulframe just yet, and the game is still in early development. Early access may be given to some fans within a year though.
