Several developers from Forza Horizon’s Playground Games, which is owned by Xbox, have left the company to form a new studio called Maverick Games.

In a report by Eurogamer, former Forza Horizon 5 creative director Mike Brown will lead Maverick Games and will be joined by five other former Playground employees. The development team is set to work on a “premium open world game for consoles and PC” and has already secured “significant seed funding.”

“For players, we’re already at work on an exciting ultra-high quality title, and for developers, we’re building a home where everyone is encouraged to take risks, be curious, be creative, be innovative, be themselves, and above all — be a Maverick,” Maverick Games said in a statement.

Playground Games was founded back in 2010 and until recently has been working almost exclusively on Forza Horizon games. Back in 2020, Playground Games was announced by Xbox to be working on the latest Fable title.

Head of Xbox Game Studios Matt Booty had said that Playground has “a real passion for the IP and a unique point of view on what’s core to Fable. Everything I’ve seen as the game progresses tells me this is going to be a very high-quality release.”

The Forza Horizon games have been popular for a long time as a result of their attention-to-detail and immersive gameplay. The most recent release, Forza Horizon 5, took players to Mexico in an adventure that has been considered one of the best racing games in recent times.
