Both a sequel and spin-off film are currently in development for Netflix’s new spy-thriller, The Gray Man.
The original film was already directed with the intention of creating a franchise surrounding the film, so this is nothing unexpected by Netflix. The sequel film, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, will star Ryan Gosling like its predecessor.
“With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan,” the Russo brothers stated.
The movie will be produced under the Russo’s AGBO banner and Joe Roth and Jeffery Kirschenbaum’s Roth and Kirschenbaum Films.
AGBO will also be developing another franchise for Netflix, a sequel film for 2020’s Extraction, which starred Chris Hemsworth.
The spin-off film’s plot is currently being held from the public’s eye, however what we do know is that Deadpool writer Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick will be behind the film’s script, so it’ll be exciting to see what they come up with.
The original movie, which was premiered on Netflix only 5 days ago, after a week of being in theaters, is based around Mark Greaney’s book, The Gray Man. In the film Gosling plays as an agent named Six which is trying to escape from the clutches of a mercenary, played by Hollywood star Chris Evans. The mercenary is being commanded by a high-level government official hoping to hide his corruption from the attention of officials.
Although the film only received a 48% on Rotten Tomatoes and a negative THR review, the movie’s viewers clearly enjoyed the spy movie, with a 91% Rotten Tomatoes audience rating. Apparently the film also debuted as the number 1 film in almost 100 countries, garnering a massive 88.55 million hours of viewing during its opening weekend alone.
