Jordan Peele’s highly-anticipated film Nope has become his best-performing film yet, after a strong domestic opening of $44 million across North America, as reported by Universal.
The film is his third film now to open at at the number one spot in the domestic box office and is currently the biggest domestic opening for an original script film since 2019. The former was also directed by Peele.
The sci-fi film stars Daniel Kaluuya as the main protagonist, a horse wrangler who has to deal with alien-issues.
However, despite its popularity, the movie underperformed by around $6 million.
Nope topped Get Out, Peele’s very first film, by $11 million. However it underperformed compared to the whopping $70 million opening that his second film, Us, had back in 2019, an impressive number considering its $20 million budget. However both movies would go on to make $255 million globally.
However, Nope is rated R, isn’t a sequel film to an already popular franchise, and had a budget of $68 million, which could explain part of the issue.
Comscore’s senior media analyst, Paul Dergarabedian, told CNN “When it comes to Jordan Peele, it’s not so much about the opening weekend as much as it’s about building that word of mouth. His movies are in it for the long haul.”
Furthermore however, Peele’s movies have had a trend of being on the more… abstract side, which tends to confuse many of the viewers and what led to the new film’s ‘B’ score from CinemaScore. It’s an unfortunate reality for directors like Peele.
However, although there were issues with its launch the film is projected to be yet again another success for Peele and Universal studio.
