Modern Warfare 2 phone requirement is PC only

The controversial phone requirement that Overwatch 2 had for all players, and was later dropped for some, applies to PC players only for Modern Warfare 2, Activision confirmed.

In a blog post, the publisher clarified that the SMS security policy for Modern Warfare 2 does not apply to console players and will only be required to play the game on PC. Activision added that the SMS policy for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 on Battle.net is the same one that has been on the PC version of Warzone since May 2020. The SMS security policy also applies to Steam players.

In August of this year, Modern Warfare 2019 also added the SMS security policy for PC players.

The blog went on to explain that “SMS verification is critical to our anti-cheat enforcement efforts, tackling illicit account creation at its source. This helps our security team to maintain account and game security in order to provide a safe, fair, and fun gaming experience for all our players.

“The SMS verification requirement for game access is used for security purposes only. Call of Duty does not use SMS verification for marketing purposes.”

Although not specified precisely why the requirement applied to PC players only, it is likely due to cheating software that is only accessible on PC.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set to release on October 28, but players who preorder the game will have early access to the campaign starting October 20.

Activision is also planning on releasing premium content for Modern Warfare 2 in 2023, including a ‘greatest hits’ pack that contains multiplayer maps from several classic Call of Duty games to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Call of Duty.
